The Department of Justice has charged 11 defendants with seditious conspiracy relating to January 6th. One of these defendants is Elmer Stewart Rhodes III, leader of the right wing militia group, the “Oath Keepers.” Sedition is a very rare charge in American history.
The protests at the US Capital had a grand total 5 casualties and only one was directly connected to the protests. Two died naturally of medial emergencies and one of a drug overdose. Capital Police Officer Brian Sicknick died the next day after suffering from two thromboembolic strokes. The only death directly related to the protest was when a Capitol Police officer fatally shot Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt.
Compare these events to our “summer of love” in 2020. Americans were up in arms about police firing on African Americans when their lives were directly in danger. Babbit was an unarmed, nonthreatening, and at a great distance from the officer in question. Her killer got off scott free and the media claims she had it coming because of relationship drama in her private life.
Where were the charges of sedition when BLM insurrectionists burned a police station in Minneapolis? Where were the sedition and insurrection charges when violent rioters relentlessly assaulted police for 100+ days strait in Portland, Oregon?
The difference is very simple. January 6th was a handful of angry Americans trying to hold politicians accountable. The summer of 2020 was rioters doing politicians’ bidding. It’s time we re-instill principle and constitutional values in the media, the education system, and other fundamental American institutional pillars. There’s no telling what would happen next if we don’t.
