Indiana Hero Vindicates State’s Constitutional Carry Laws

The Mayor and some in the media are calling him the “good Samaritan.” The 22-year-old hero drew his weapon when he saw the vulnerable in need. He acted quickly and cut a bloodthirsty killer’s rampage short.

A Moment of Bravery, A Call to Action

On Sunday, July 17th, a crazed shooter killed three innocent people and injured two in a Greenwood, Indiana shopping mall. He would likely have killed far more if it weren’t for a 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken exercising his Second Amendment rights.

On the first of July, Indiana opened the door for concealed carry without a permit. 17 days later, there’s no telling how many lives that move has saved.

The Response

The Mayor of Greenwood, Mark Myers lauded Sapirman’s actions and issued the following in a statement to the public:

“As of now, we do not know the shooter’s identity or motive. We do know that someone we are calling the ‘good Samaritan’ was able to shoot the assailant and stop further bloodshed. This person saved lives tonight. On behalf of the City of Greenwood, I am grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation.”

Attorney General Todd Rotika had this to say:

The suspect was a juvenile runaway. The police expect that he wither walked or took an Uber to the mall on the night of the incident. He used a Sig Sauer Model 400M 5.56 Caliber rifle. He also left an M&P 15 in the bathroom. The killer also had a Glock 33 on his person but only used the Sig.

The police found a note that the killer left in a bathroom stall but have not released further details as of yet.

Even CNN Can’t Criticize

CNN and the New York Times mention mass shootings and gun control in their coverage but can’t find a reason to criticize Sapirman’s Second Amendment heroism.

Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said the city, community and state were all “grateful for his heroism.”

“We’re very thankful for a young 22-year-old man who stopped this violent act,” Myers said. “This young man, Greenwood’s good Samaritan, acted within seconds, stopping the shooter and saving countless lives.”

The Greenwood Police Department has trained for a mass shooting scenario and has performed “multiple mall exercises” to prepare for active shooter situations, the police chief said.

“But I’m going to tell you, the real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop this shooter almost as soon as he began,” Ison said.

The best they could muster was a small caveat:

It’s rare to have an armed bystander attack an active shooter, according to a data analysis published by The New York Times.

The reason it’s rare is quite simple. The vast majority of shootings happen where carrying a firearm is illegal. This is also a prime example of how police are insufficeint alone to protect the general public. So let’s take a look at who good samaritans protect.

The Victims

When the shooting started, Elisjsha was with his girlfriend and saw the chaos erupt. Minutes later, he returned fire, released 10 rounds, and ended Sapirman’s rampage.

Sapirman ended the lives of a couple from Indianapolis, Pedro Pineda, 56, and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37, as well as 30-year-old Victor Gomez, of Indianapolis.

He also wounded a 22-year-old woman’s leg and a 12-year-old girl in a ricochet.

Thankfully, the bloodshed ended there, due purely to Dicken’s bravery.

Police report that there were no indicators that Sapirman was unstable. He had no criminal record and no real red flags. Most gun control restrictions would not have stopped him from obtaining a firearm legally. He practiced at a local range (Range USA) and bought all of his firearms legitimately.

The answer to mass shootings is not gun control. Psychopaths will always be able to obtain firearms. Sapirman is a great example of how the filters we have in place fail to effectively bar psychopaths from arming themselves.

Unfortunately, lunatics like Sapirman will always exist. Even with a disarmed population, cities like London experience dreadful mass stabbings.

One thing I can tell you for sure is that mass shooters shake in their boots at the thought of men like Dicken. Any one of them who hears this story will think twice. An armed population is a civil population because respect and self-preservation go hand in hand.

What’s more, if a killer has no idea who might be armed, he may never even draw his weapon. This is why nearly 99% of shootings happen in “gun free zones.” The great equalizer may be a weapon of war, but it is also a shield for the vulnerable, and the tool of a hero.
